I spent this past Saturday, August 9 at the 4th Annual Muslim Unity Day at Six Flags, Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. I was there in the capacity of Illume, sitting at the booth and alternating between talking to people about the magazine and people watching, both very interesting activities.

Many organizations participated in Muslim Unity Day, including Islamic bookstores, clothing stores, and even jewelry stores. There was a concert held at the end of the day that featured comedian Imran J. Khan and musical acts SevenEightSix and Five Eighty. To me, the highlight of the concert was when hip hop artist Amir ‘Five Eighty’ Abdul-Shakur serenaded his wife on stage. She almost didn't come up to the stage but after it was obvious that Abdul-Shakur would not relent in calling for her, she went up. There, she sat in a chair while he knelt on one knee and sang to her. The audience, including me, ate it up.

This MUD event marked the first time the event has been held at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and upwards of 2,500 Muslims showed up.

Next year marks the 5th anniversary of Muslim Unity Day sponsored by the Muslim Unity Foundation so be sure to keep an eye out for that some time next year, InshAllah.
